GEO for Ecommerce: Get Your Products Cited in AI Search
Ecommerce sites have a natural GEO advantage because product data is inherently structured. The challenge is implementing that structure correctly so AI engines can extract and cite it when customers are researching purchases.
The ecommerce GEO opportunity
Ecommerce has a structural advantage in GEO: products have definable attributes - name, description, price, availability, reviews - that map naturally to Schema.org Product markup. Most ecommerce platforms generate much of this automatically. The gap is in implementing it correctly and completely.
AI engines answering product research queries look for structured, verifiable product data. A product page with complete schema gives AI engines quotable facts - price, rating, category, brand - that a page without schema simply cannot offer in a machine-readable form.
Priority 1: Product schema on every product page
Every product page should include Product schema with at minimum:
- name - exact product name
- description - clear, factual product description
- brand - manufacturer or brand entity
- offers - current price and availability
- aggregateRating - star rating and review count
- image - product image URL
Most ecommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento) support Product schema natively or via plugins. Check that it is enabled and that fields are populated correctly - partial schema is significantly less effective than complete schema.
Priority 2: Review markup
Customer reviews marked up with Review and AggregateRating schema are frequently cited in AI responses to purchase-intent queries. "Is [product] worth buying?" is exactly the type of question users bring to AI search, and a product with 4.8 stars from 340 reviews is a concrete, citable fact.
Priority 3: Category-level buying guide content
Create authoritative buying guides at category level that capture pre-purchase research queries:
- "What to look for when buying [category]"
- "Best [category] for [use case]"
- "[Category] buying guide [year]"
These guides are highly citable and position your brand as the authority before users reach product pages. Include FAQPage schema with the common questions in your category.
Priority 4: Brand AI crawler access
Check your robots.txt across all domains - including your main site, any subdomains, and your CDN if it serves product images. Ensure GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are all permitted.
Priority 5: FAQ pages per product
Add FAQPage schema to key product pages with common customer questions - sizing, shipping, compatibility, usage. These long-tail queries are frequently asked in AI search and your structured answers can earn citations.
Platform tip: Shopify users can use the Schema Plus or JSON-LD for SEO apps to implement comprehensive product schema. WooCommerce users should check that Yoast or RankMath is configured to output full Product schema including offer and rating data.
